At The Side Hustler we are all about motivating those who are keen to begin something of their own. There's no better way to get inspired than reading about those who have successfully managed to pull off their side business. We asked the founders of Pretty Baked Dubai, Anushka and Lenita a few questions and this is what they had to say - Q. What motivated you behind the launch of Pretty Baked Dubai?

A. "Friends for over 13 years, we always made plans of starting a business from a very young age. We would brainstorm various business ideas but as summer passed by, so would the idea. Over the years we went on different paths to pursue our education and careers, drifting away from our teenage plans of starting something of our own. In 2017, Lenita moved back to Dubai and over time our passion for food and business revived as we started discussing different product offerings. Both of us now had more experience to offer and given our completely different choices in almost everything we drew a good balance to exploit each other’s strengths.

We did a bit of research and given our passion for sweet over savory, we decided to do something in desserts. There was a market for cookies in Dubai however quarter pound cookies were a concept we wanted to bring here from the West. Giant, stuffed, chewy cookies. We tried and tested several different flavors and fillings to reach the cookie flavors we have today."

Q. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

A. "Well so far was the easy part of our business. The next step was to get our product out in the market. Given we were both busy with work/education it was hard to find time for Pretty Baked. Months passed by and procrastination kept building on. One fine evening we decided to just go for it and created our Instagram page. That put us on the hot seat and things started speeding up. Before we knew it, we were up and running. Everything just came together.

One of our main challenges was time commitment. We found it challenging in the beginning to balance our existing jobs, personal life and Pretty Baked at the same time. However, as time passed by we grew better at time management and with the support of our family and friends, everything was smooth sailing. We have eight flavors on the menu now and plan on adding more flavors soon."

Q. What are your plans for the future? A. "As per our future plans, in the short run we intend to reach out to more consumers through aggressive marketing, participating in exhibitions and food markets. However, in the long run we intend on opening our own store where we can serve our customers cookies right out of the oven."

Q. What advice do you have for anyone out there who wants to begin something of their own?

A. "For us, Pretty Baked is our passion rather than a business and we believe that’s what encourages us and keeps us going. So, if you believe in your product, enjoy making it. If you think it’ll make your customers happy then just go for it. It’ll always be challenging, have its own ups and downs but don’t just back down easily. Keep going and enjoying what you do."
