Updated: Aug 24, 2021

We often hear things about the perfect resume that are far from the truth, here are some of those myths busted.

A resume is an important document of your job search and holds the key in helping you land more interviews. Often times, you may have been told different things about creating that perfect resume. Should resumes be nothing more than one page? should they be plain and simple like the traditional resumes? or is it okay to lie on your resume? Confusing as it may be, it is even more frustrating if you are not able to land any interviews by following those myths. Here are some of those common resume myths -

  • Myth #1 - A good resume will get you a job. Fact - A good resume will get you an interview. Your performance in the interview, your ability to meet the organization's requirements, and your skills will determine if you get the job or not.

  • Myth #2 - A resume should be no longer than one page. Fact - One page resumes are great if you've just graduated from university or hold very little work experience. If you are an experienced professional, one page will probably not be enough to list all of your qualifications, job experience, and skills. However, it is best to limit your resume to two pages.

  • Myth #3 - A resume should only be in a black and white format. Fact - Black and white resumes were the norm. Modern resumes often include color. A splash of color can help your resume get noticed in a sea of plain resumes and is an extension of your personal brand. However, it is best to stick to no more than two colors on your resume.

A resume that is discarded and thrown away.
  • Myth #4 - You need to hide your employment gaps. Fact - Hiding those gaps will not help you. Instead of hiding them, include them by providing a short explanation about each one in your cover letter.

  • Myth #5 - Include your entire work history. Fact - You do not need to list down every job that you have worked on your resume. Focus on those jobs which are relevant to the job position you are applying for, and even then, focus on the last 10 years or so.

  • Myth #6 - List down your duties for each position. Fact - Simply listing down your roles and responsibilities for each position will not interest the recruiter or the employer. Employers are concerned about your achievements on the job along with relevant projects that you have undertaken during your tenure. Including numbers can be a bonus.

  • Myth #7 - You should give everyone and anyone your resume. Fact - This approach is often recommended by others so that you can land some or the other job rather than having no job. However, the approach is wrong. You need to focus on the companies that are within your target industry and on those jobs that align with your experiences or interests.

  • Myth #8 - Your resume should have an objective. Fact - Objectives are outdated. Recruiters know that your objective is to secure a job. Instead of an objective, include a personal branding statement or career highlights/professional profile that explains your career, skills, and experiences at a glance.
