Stop making these excuses if you want to succeed!

Updated: Aug 24, 2021

Successful people are where they are today simply because they do not make excuses and have the discipline to do the right things every single day.

A man celebrating being successful.

We all dream of being successful, being our own boss, sipping cocktails on the beach while we earn passive income. The dream of being financially independent appeals to many but why are so many not able to achieve that dream? Keeping economic and financial factors aside, most people just don't put in the required effort. Instead, they try to justify their lack of effort with commonly used excuses.

This also applies not just to personal finance but everywhere where you may have a goal such as fitness, healthy eating, reading books, etc. A simple rule to understand is that if you are not working towards your dreams or goals, they are probably not that important or don't rank high in your priorities. If you want something you need to make it a priority and work towards it, day in day out.

Here are some common excuses used by those who fail to succeed -

  • "I don't have time" - This has to be the most commonly used excuse. It's not really hard to make time. Start small by dedicating just 30 minutes a day. This is way better than no time at all. If you still find yourself short of time, check out our post on finding time for your side hustle, here. Simple tips that help you find extra time in your day not just for your side hustle but for anything else too.

  • "I'm too young or too old" - As the saying goes that age is just a number - it is never too late or too early to start something in your life. All you need is a will and desire to get started with something and learn along the way. Don't be afraid to ask for help from those with experience or those much younger than you.

A quote that says be stronger than your excuses.
  • "I don't want to fail" - Failures and rejection are a part of life. If you do not fail, it simply means that you haven’t really tried. Failures help you learn from your experiences and make you better in many ways.

  • "It's too difficult" - If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Nothing worthwhile comes easy and quick. As long as you make progress and learn along the way, you’ll find that nothing is too difficult. If you wait to figure everything out, you will never get started.

  • "I'm not good enough" - Success is incredibly difficult when you feel like you are not good enough, not talented enough, not smart enough, or not motivated enough. These are signs of a lack of self-confidence. Believe in your abilities and the fact that you can always learn and better yourself.

  • "I will start tomorrow" - The best time to start something was yesterday. The second best time is today. If you genuinely have the time, then use the opportunity to do it instead of delaying it for an uncertain tomorrow. As the saying goes - tomorrow never comes.

  • "I don't have enough money" - If you can’t be successful without money, then you likely won’t find success once you have it. You can start most things at no/low cost. If you need a little more money, start saving up for it. Find our tips and ways to make some extra income here.
